Seattle: Free AOKI screening May 14, 2011

AOKI will be screened at 7:00 pm on Saturday, May 14, 2011 at the Wing Luke Museum of the Asian Pacific American Experience as part of the Race, Radicalism, and Repression on the Pacific Coast and Beyond conference from May 12 – 14 at the University of Washington. Co-Producers/Co-Directors Ben Wang & Mike Cheng will be in attendance along with Black Panther Party alumni for a panel discussion after the film. The screening will be free to the public and we hope to see you there!

2011 Screenings

New dates for 2011 screenings of AOKI have now been added to the Screenings section of the site. More details will be announced in the coming months for both the West Oakland screening (which will kick off a month long exhibit dedicated to Richard’s life at the West Oakland library) as well as the University of Washington, Seattle screening in the coming months. Additional screenings are also in the works and will be announced once details and arrangements have been finalized. Thanks to everyone for your continued interest and support in the film, we hope to see you at one of our 2011 screenings!

12/10 AOKI NYC Premiere

AOKI will make it’s New York City premiere on December 10, 2010 as part of the 2010 Annual Black Panther Film Festival in Harlem. The screening will be held at Maysles Cinema on 343 Malcolm X Blvd (between 127th & 128th St.) at 8:15 pm. After the screening there will be a Q&A with Co-Producers/Co-Directors Mike Cheng & Ben Wang along with Emory Douglas (Black Panther Party, Minister of Culture) followed by a reception and music. Tickets can be purchased here, we hope to see you there!

AOKI Screenings In Vancouver and Boston

Thanks to everyone who made it to the Washington DC screening last month! AOKI will be featured in this weekend’s Vancouver Asian Film Festival on Saturday, November 6. Co-Producer & Co-Director Ben Wang will be in attendance so be sure to say hello if you see him. Following the VAFF screening our next screening will be in Boston as part of the Boston Asian American Film Festival on Friday, November 12th. AOKI DVD at the 10th Annual Malcolm X Jazz Arts Festival

AOKI DVDs will be available for $15 ($5 off) at this Saturday’s 10th annual Malcolm X Jazz Arts Festival hosted by the EastSide Arts Alliance in Oakland, CA. The festival will be from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm at San Antonio Park located on 18th Ave. & Foothill Blvd. Look for the DVDs to be sold at the Asian Prisoner Support Committee (APSC) table. We’re looking forward to another great festival and would like to congratulate the EastSide Arts Alliance for all their hard work in reaching the milestone of the 10th anniversary of this festival. Sidenote: the first public screening of a rough cut of AOKI in 2008 (for which Richard was in attendance) took place at the EastSide Cultural Center.

The Malcolm X Jazz Arts Festival has become a great Bay Area tradition that brings together some of the very best jazz artists, community organizations, local artisans & food vendors, and the next generation of young artists and cultural workers. Updates & Thank Yous

Over the past two weeks there have been four screenings of AOKI in L.A. (Asian Pacific Film Festival 2010), College of Alameda, Knox College, and Laney College (as part of the BSU’s Malcolm X Week). Ben and Mike would like to thank all the organizers who helped put together the events as well as everyone who came to see the film and/or participate in the Q&A sessions that followed the screenings. We hope you enjoyed the film and appreciate all the interest and support for Richard’s life and the film.

We have submitted applications for several film festivals and have screenings in the works for New York, Washington DC, Atlanta, Seattle, San Diego, Hawaii, Vancouver, and Toronto and will be announcing the dates after they have been confirmed here on this site as well as on Twitter and our Facebook Fan Page.

In the meantime our Film Coverage section has been updated with recent articles that have been written on AOKI and we will be uploading audio of radio interviews that Ben and Mike have conducted as well. Our YouTube channel will also be getting updated soon with deleted scenes from AOKI.

Three screenings this week!

There will be three screenings of AOKI held this week. Co-directors/co-producers Mike Cheng & Ben Wang will be present for Q&A for all three screenings. First this week on Tuesday May 4th is the LA screening as part of the Asian Pacific Film Festival 2010 presented by Visual Communications. Tickets are still available online here.

Next on Thursday May 6th AOKI will be screened at the College of Alameda at 12:00 pm. The screening is being sponsored by Asian Pacific American Student Success (APASS) and Associated Students of College of Alameda (ASCOA).

We’ll wrap up the week at Knox College in Galesburg, IL where AOKI will be screened on Saturday May 8th at 4:00 pm. The screening is being sponsored by Asian Student Association (ASA) and Allied Blacks for Liberty and Equality (ABLE).

Chicago Screening Four Days Away

Just four more days until AOKI is screened at the Gene Siskel Film Center in Chicago. Tickets are still available at Ticketmaster.com. Check out our Film Coverage section for an article about the film recently published by Chicago Time Out.

AOKI will also be screened in Los Angeles on May 4th as part of the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival presented by Visual Communications. More details will be announced soon.
